Top States for New Donors & Online Donors
Blackbaud has a tremendous amount of data about the nonprofit sector. Sometimes that leads to very valuable insights into what’s happening. Sometimes it’s just ambient awareness or trivial trivia. What you do with the information makes all the difference.
Today we’ll take a look which states have the highest percentage of new donors and online donors. This data comes from the our donorCentrics Internet Giving Benchmarking group and looks across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This group is comprised of 14 very large nonprofit organizations with data from 2009.

If you’re just looking at the list, then the value of the information is relatively low. Just like a report of giving by city. It makes for good headlines but doesn’t really help nonprofits very much.
If you’re using the list and comparing it to your own donor demographics, then you will get a lot more value. That’s the power and importance of benchmarking.
Notes: Demographic characteristics of 2009 donors, broken down by the donor’s state of residence, including the District of Columbia. Based on an aggregate of all donors from all organizations. Excludes donors giving $1,000 or more in 2009. Excludes donors whose state is unknown.
